My wife and I spent this weekend engrossed in an Audiobook. A great thriller by Alice Feeney (named “Queen of the Twists” by Real Simple Magazine!) called Good Bad Girl.
It’s chock full of twists and turns and has us guessing until the very end. (And if you are a fan of murder mysteries and intrigue like I am, I highly recommend it.
It’s on Libby (you can read more in this post), and the narrator is really great!)
Just an aside — why does it seem like 90% of the novels I like take place in England — and specifically London? Any ideas?
One thing I noticed was that several of the characters were profoundly unhappy. All because of unfortunate events of the past.
And this unhappiness clouded their perception of the world. Not trusting, and even being annoyed by people who are too often happy.
I see this myself in the world, and it really saddens me. To think that people are so cynical and pessimistic that they think that there must be ulterior motives. That people who go around with a pleasant disposition, and a permanent smile are hiding something.
Being “fake”.
And, if I’m speaking honestly, I’d have to admit that the current version of myself might have had a somewhat disconcerting effect on the self of my younger days.
Days when I was caught up in how the world perceived me.
Caught up in the all-too-often fruitless search for love.
Caught up in my disappointment at my lack of success.
But this is not what God wants for us. And it does not need to be our fate!
The end of suffering, The return of knowledge, The release of pain. God promises all these because they are his will.
He is not some far-off God, checking a cosmic ledger of debits and credits, good and bad, worthiness and unworthiness.
He is a God in you and through you and surrounding you.
He is you.
He yearns for you to remember what you chose to forget. To give up the cross you bear, and that you crucify yourself on — every single day!
Let your real eyes open. Let them receive the light. Let them magnify it and reflect it back upon the world.
Let the universe know of the truth you are.
Today’s Meditation
The goal for today is to mediate on two related ideas — one in the morning, and one in the evening.
The object is not to create rituals, but to facilitate your learning. And learning is hampered if you are unwilling.
