Hello friend!
Today I decided to share a poem with you that you may have missed from last year.
I was reminded of it this weekend.
We were walking our dogs at the park when we noticed a squirrel lying in the middle of the roadway.
Fearing the worst, we sat and waited for a minute, until the creature slowly moved off towards a tree on the side of the parking area.
But, as it neared its destination, we saw a fallen mate, curled up at the base of that tree.
And we watched as two of his friends tried to nudge it, to get it to come with them. But to no avail.
It was absolutely heartbreaking. And it reminded me of this poem I wrote, based on a story from my Mother in my childhood.
It’s called Come and Play!
(And if you listen to the audio, I apologize that I wasn’t able to make it through without breaking up! I’m just not that strong!)
Come and Play!
Nuzzling his soft, silky fur
With her short, stubby snout
She beckoned:
Come and Play!
The Sun is shining!
Let’s run down the old dusty road
Like we did when we were pups
And feel our hearts beat out of our skin!
Let’s roll in the green, green grass
And soak up the springtime sun
With our satisfied bellies!
Let’s chase chipmunks and squirrels
And all the other things
That good girls and boys do!
Come and play!
Are you coming?
Are
You
Coming?
?
?
?
And then
slowly
She pulled back
Stood up
And wandered off
in the direction
of the setting sun.
Thanks for reading!
This poem was inspired by my mother (an accomplished poet herself) in a story she related to me from one of her many walks near my childhood home.
It still brings tears to my eyes every time I think of it.
I hope you are moved in reading as much as I was in writing it!
Blessings and peace to you, my friend!
With all my Love,
Aaron
Thank you so much for the restack, @Ayesha A.
