To be a dad
Is a thing so grand
It’s value is not easily told
To nurture a child
To a woman or a man
It can’t be expressed in pounds of gold
To kiss and hug
To fill with love
To ever bless their children’s souls
Though pain may come
To bear witness to who they become
Is all it takes to make him whole
I was inspired to write this poem while walking my dogs, as I watched the magnificent sunrise over the East Tennessee mountains on Father’s Day.
I wanted to capture the essence of what fatherhood means to me and why I treasure it so much in a short, heartfelt verse.
If you got to experience the joy of being with your father, or one you treat as a father, I hope you value and treasure that time. And the same applies double if you are a father yourself!
And I definitely did appreciate that I could share this special day with my amazing wife and two beautiful daughters, who brighten my every single day in innumerable ways.
I just learned that my own father is experiencing some trying times, having just been diagnosed with lymphoma in the past few days.
And even though the prognosis is EXCELLENT for a full recovery, I wasn't able to see him, and embrace him. It made me really miss him, and to promise myself to somehow find a way to see more of him while I still can.
The days of this earthly life are short, and only grow shorter. We need to remember this, and treasure every day, and every moment we get with the ones we love.
Blessing and Love to you, my dear friend!
Aaron

Thank you for your beautiful poem, prose, and photos, Aaron. I am sure you continue to make your dad very proud, just as your children make you proud. It's clear that there is a lot of love in your family! Sorry to hear about your dad's diagnosis, but glad that the prognosis is good.
"Smoke show." Hahaaa! What a dadly shirt.
